Delving deeper into the depths of Hell than he ever has before, the Slayer fights demons from both the past and the present. DOOM: The Dark Ages Revelations is the latest DLC that offers players a new story instalment of the DOOM franchise. This DLC comes free with a copy of the Collectable edition or Premium edition. For everyone else, this is a paid DLC for the base game copy.
Bridging the Gap
DOOM: The Dark Ages Revelations follows immediately after the main story of DOOM: The Dark Ages, with the Slayer fresh from his victory over both Kreed Maykr and Prince Ahzrak. On his quest to vanquish all the forces of Hell, he moves to challenge Hell’s High Council in typical Slayer fashion. By blowing their heads off one bullet at a time. But first he must acquire the Oracle to find the path into the deepest pits of Hell.
While the base game begins the story of the Slayer, Revelations fleshes out the Slayer’s and the Night Sentinels’ backgrounds. In my opinion, this is definitely a story worth experiencing. DOOM lore buffs get expanded lore, while newcomers have plenty of tidbits to sink their teeth into! Furthermore, we get to experience stunning new set pieces and areas of Hell never seen before.
Flow like Spear
I recall on my review of DOOM: The Dark Ages that I found the combat had way too many specific button presses at very specific times, making the flow of combat feel less like a flow and more like a quick time event. However, I am pleased to announce a lot of this is remedied thanks to the introduction of the Chain Spear.
This little gadget allows for more 3-dimensional traversal in combat, making you more mobile than ever. I know what you’re thinking, but Conor, couldn’t we already close the gap with a shield bash? Yes, you’re right. But that always felt like a sudden convulsion forward akin to a teleport. With the chain spear, traversal feels cinematic and above all earned by a well-placed skewer shot to the head. Which is to only mention one aspect of this weapon. You can cleave, stab and throw to your heart’s content. This change made me super excited to play this DLC, as in my eyes, DOOM: The Dark Ages now has the most fun combat experience in any DOOM game.
But there I digress; there is still plenty more to experience in DOOM: The Dark Ages Revelations. This DLC treats you like a big boy, and so the difficulty is ramped up to the nth degree. It is also a lot longer than expected, taking anywhere between 9 – 14 hours to complete. This is nothing unexpected, but just a warning to those who haven’t picked up DOOM in a while. This DLC is playable if you haven’t completed the campaign, but it is recommended you finish the main storyline first. It will treat you as if you have, regardless!
Revelations of a Slayer
To anyone who got DOOM: The Dark Ages as part of the Collectable bundle or the Premium edition, you just got one of the greatest DLCs offered by the DOOM franchise. To others, I recommend seriously considering buying this DLC, as it’s the gem in the crown that is DOOM: The Dark Ages. I find little fault (if any) with this DLC and really do think a lot has been improved and expanded upon.
