It’s been over 10 years since the last Lego Batman game (not including the release of Lego DC Super-Villains). TT Games returns to the franchise with Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, a new take on the traditional Lego game formula.
Rumours of the title have been circulating on the internet for a while now, but it has finally been officially announced by Warner Bros. at Gamescom this year.
Return of the Caped Crusader
The new title seems to be ditching most of the extended DC universe characters in favour of solely focusing on an original story based on Batman’s mythos and rich history. TT Games has said that the game will follow Batman from his early days training with the League of Shadows to his later years leading the Bat-Family, with characters like Robin, Nightwing, and Batgirl joining the roster. Other characters, such as Jim Gordon, Talia al Ghul, Ra’s al Ghul, and even Batmite will also appear.
Gameplay
Gameplay has been changed significantly from prior titles, seemingly taking heavy inspiration from the highly successful Batman: Arkham series. Players can drive, grapple, and glide across an all-new open-world Gotham City, stopping crimes, solving puzzles, and finding collectibles as they explore DC’s notorious city of crime. The Caped Crusader boasts an all-new combat system featuring fluid combat, counters, stealth takedowns, and the use of Batman’s wide arsenal of gadgets. In a first for the series, Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight will also feature difficulty modes: Classic, Caped Crusader, and Dark Knight.
Familiar Faces
The game is also drawing heavy inspiration from Batman’s cinematic history, pulling character designs and set pieces from movies such as Batman Returns, The Dark Knight, and 2022’s The Batman. Fans will be excited to see Heath Ledger’s Joker, Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman, and Tom Hardy’s Bane (voiced by Matt Berry) adapted into the iconic Lego form. Previous iconic Bat-vehicles also feature, with the Tumbler, Batpod, and 2022’s Batmobile confirmed to be in the game. I was personally thrilled to hear that over 100 unlockable outfits will be included, ranging from movie suits to deep cuts like the Rainbow Suit and The Brave and the Bold Suit.
Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is scheduled for release on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X and Series S in 2026.
