God of War is back! No, not the third-person Nordic sad dad sim but the utterly psychotic murder rampages from the PS2 and PS3! Announced at the recent State of Play by the original Kratos, TC Carson, the original three God of War titles are all being remade for the PlayStation 5. Though details are sparse, fans of the over-the-top revenge stories that tackle the Greek pantheon are sure to be thrilled! It’s unclear what direction these titles will take.
Will they be complete re-imaginings, bringing the combat of recent titles to the older stories? Or will they play as the older games always have, but with a beautiful modern-day glow-up? God of War 3’s PS4 port still looks fantastic and plays amazingly, so it can’t help but feel like a possible wasted effort to do full remakes when a nice remaster can hit the spot, but we’ll reserve judgment until more is known! Hopefully, the PSP titles and the often forgotten Ascension become accessible soon, too.
That wasn’t all for Kratos! A new game was shadow-dropped! Sons of Sparta, a 2D prequel about a younger Kratos, is available now! Following Kratos’ training with his brother Deimos, it’s fascinating to see how God of War’s intense combat will adapt to a two-dimensional plane!
