Yes, my friend, you did indeed read the title correctly. The legendary puzzle master himself, Professor Layton, is returning. A teaser trailer for a new game debuted at Nintendo Direct. Titled Professor Layton and the New World of Steam, the game has no release date just yet.
From what we can see in the teaser, Professor Layton and the New World of Steam is keeping the same style that has made the series so endearing. The eponymous Professor himself has got a slightly more modern look to him, graphically speaking. Similar to the graphical updates that can be seen in the most recent Pokémon games on Switch.
We’ve not had a main-line entry to the Professor Layton series since 2013’s Azran Legacy. A spin-off featuring the Professor’s daughter did release in 2017, but Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy seems to be quite universally disliked. It’s extremely exciting to be getting back into the world of Professor Layton, and I, for one, cannot wait.
Roll on a release date. And hopefully a physical edition. Preferably a collector’s edition, but I’ll settle for just a standard too. I’ve been a fan of Layton since I was a little kid and the first game released. Hell, I’ve recently been playing through them all again. This announcement has me over the moon.
