Midnight Murder Club – The Night Is Dark And Full Of Terrors

The FPS market is an oversaturated market. Most of them are the same, forgotten their identity (I’m looking at you Call of Duty) or we’re waiting for them to finally bounce back (Battlefield 6). Point is, none at the moment are standing out from the crowd. But Velan Studios decided to give us something new. A new setting and type of FPS to stand out from the massive FPS market. Midnight Murder Club is the new FPS multiplayer by Velan Studios. How does it stand out from every other FPS and is it worth playing? Let us step into the darkness of Midnight Murder Club and find out.

Hide And Seek

The premise of Midnight Murder Club is simple. Players are thrown into a game of hide and seek in a dark mansion. You are armed only with a revolver and a flashlight. That’s it. All players in the lobby must then track down other players and kill them. The gameplay is simple, just shoot and kill the enemies. The gunplay is good and getting kills, especially headshots with the revolver is a lot of fun and satisfying. You also have a knife but this is more of a last resort but can lead to tense knife fights when players are out of ammo.

Another great part of the game is the mansion. The mansion is pitch dark. Literally, you can’t see anything at all without your flashlight. Using it is key to navigate the mansion but it can get you in trouble. Some players can be hiding in corners and if they see your flashlight, they know where you are and it makes you stand out. Using it sparingly is the best approach so you are not a massive target for everyone to take shots at. This adds to the horror element of the game and can lead to fun gun battles and actual jump-scares from players.

Better With Friends

One of the strongest aspects of Midnight Murder Club is the proximity chat. Players can talk to each other if they are nearby which can lead to a lot of fun encounters. As you may have gathered, this game is made to be played with friends. Playing with friends is a lot of fun and with the friend game pass, only one of you has to own this game to play. Very accessible. I wish more developers would do this.

This is a strong friends game to check out but can also be fun with randoms as most lobbies do use the prox chat. Despite this, playing alone can become boring and does impact the game negatively. I know every game is more fun with friends but some can be enjoyed solo. Unfortunately, Midnight Murder Club is not one of them.

Lack Of Content

A big problem for Midnight Murder Club is the lack of content. There’s only one map. That’s it. Can become pretty stale even with the fun gameplay and horror element with the pitch dark mansion. You also have some of the same game modes like Free-For-All and Team Deathmatch. Best game mode by far is Wildcards. Players can choose what wildcards to play and these change the rules of the lobby. Wildcards can change rules like making players who are shot shrink to tiny size, put a spotlight on the player who has the most kills or even burst players into flames when they die. Lots of variety and makes games way more fun. Adds to the fun of this arcade, party game. This is where you will the find the most fun in Midnight Murder Club.

Verdict

Midnight Murder Club is a fun little game. It stands out from other FPS with its horror, multiplayer style of gameplay and it is certainly original. The game is a ton of fun with friends and is best experienced if you can grab a few buddies to play with. Proximity chat is a great addition and another reason why every multiplayer game should have it. Despite this, there’s little content here and nothing really to play towards and can get stale quickly. Hopefully in the future, they add more and keep this game going.
