The highly anticipated James Bond video game, 007 First Light, had new details revealed in a special PlayStation State of Play, with the game set to release on 27 March next year on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. This included gameplay footage of 007 First Light as developers IO Interactive showed off two missions in this new, original James Bond story.
Shaken, Not Stirred
Since Daniel Craig officially retired from the iconic role, fans have been eagerly awaiting some news of another James Bond entry. Luckily, IO Interactive, developers of the acclaimed Hitman video games, answered their prayers. Patrick Gibson assumes the role of James Bond, making him the first actor to portray the character since Daniel Craig. Players will take control of a young Bond as he slowly becomes the amazing super-spy we all know and love. In the new gameplay footage, we see Bond infiltrate a high-stakes chess tournament in Slovakia in an insane car chase reminiscent of the movies. This James Bond game will be an exhilarating cinematic experience for not only Bond fans. IO Interactive’s Glacier engine also looks phenomenal here, with breathtaking graphics and showing a lively, immersive world.
License To Kill
Of course, it wouldn’t be a James Bond gameplay reveal without some combat. We got to see James take care of enemies with an all-out attack approach and using many weapons that are at his disposal from shotguns to assault rifles. IO Interactive seem to have done an excellent job with gunplay, as its early gameplay seems tight and satisfying. The best part is the melee system, where Bond can counter attacks and throw enemies away while dealing devastating blows. Players can go from gunplay into melee seamlessly during fights. One moment you are in a gunfight, next you can go up close and personal and let your fists do the talking.
Gadgets are also a big arsenal for Bond. Players can use gadgets to hack cameras, distract guards or even cut doors open with a laser. These quiet sides of the gadgets are called the Spycraft of Bond’s toolkit. ‘’Spycraft is your toolkit for the quieter side of the job. You can eavesdrop on conversations for intelligence, lift a keycard from a distracted guard’s pocket, or piece together clues from environmental details others might overlook. Every bit of information can open a shortcut or give you a way around a challenge, or a crowded security room;’’ IO Interactive said on the PlayStation Blog.

Different Playstyles
IO Interactive wants to give players multiple ways to approach missions. You have the all-out guns approach or the stealthy option. If approaching the stealthy way, players can eavesdrop on conversations to uncover secrets like keycards, or learning about shortcuts to make infiltrations easier. IO Interactive are pros in this area as they demonstrated in the Hitman games. ‘’From day one, we’ve designed the game so you can approach your objectives how you want, through what we call the Creative Approach. Maybe you’ll slip in unnoticed and reach your goal without anyone knowing you were there. Maybe you’ll go in loud, using every weapon and gadget at your disposal. Or maybe you’ll use a bit of both, and improvise, turning whatever the situation throws at you into an opportunity;’’ they said on the PlayStation Blog.
007 First Light promises to provide the best James Bond experience. With some of the early gameplay shown, it looks like it could be. Check out the full State of Play below.
