Out now on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and Steam is Neva: Prologue, a DLC which follows Alba as she has her first fateful meeting with supernatural pup, Neva.
Neva: Prologue is a fascinating DLC; it’s approximately an hour long and has a “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it ” attitude when it comes to its gameplay. There are no new abilities, actually, there are fewer abilities for Alba and Neva to utilise.
It really just has a slightly more intense experience about it because Alba doesn’t have Neva to fall back on. 90% of Alba’s abilities are lost as she is alone for a large portion of this chapter of their story. Alba is finding herself in the world, and when she chances across a butterfly, fate has something far more impressive in store for her when she follows it.
Neva!
Without Neva, Alba is centre stage, and this allows players to further fall in love with her. When you do find that small white fluff ball, the game has you protect her, as she is not the powerhouse she is in the main game.
And this lack of power is prevalent throughout the DLC. Alba utilises dodging more than ever, and there are several moments where you’re running from enemies. Also, I found that Neva: Prologue has far more puzzles in it, and they’re a lot of fun. One particular puzzle involving light and darkness is absolutely brilliant.
The star of the game for me is the art and score, the fluidity of the movement and the cutscenes are stunning, and the art style is still brimming with the battle of life and death. The score reflects that with its melodious themes that pull you in with their emotional charm.
Ultimately, Neva: Prologue is a welcome return to the world of Alba and Neva. With a lot of engaging new puzzles, new enemies to combat and a price tag that won’t put a dent in your wallet, there is a lot to like here. Even if this return is a little too brief for my liking, it’s still a charming dip back into the emotional pool of Neva.
