Part 3, Version 2
Ain’t that just the way it goes sometimes? You wait countless years for an instalment in a game series and then before you know its receiving a new edition! Indeed, this enhanced edition is set to come to PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2 and PC this year! This crowdfunded game, a sequel to two bonkers but beloved Sega classics, originally met with a fairly divided critical reception. This new edition looks to address some of the original criticisms. Improved graphics and performance, new 4K textures, DLSS/FRR support, and more NPCs are some of the promised performance enhancements.
And that’s not all! As well as technical improvements, there are also some great new additions. A classic camera inspired by the first two games will be a new option for nostalgic fans! Tweaks to stamina, health restoration and reduced money barriers promise a smoother ride through the story this time. Cutscene skipping and QTE timing adjustments will help players manage their time spent playing, as well as improved menus and UX elements.
These features are all optional, so if you want to experience the game as it came out in 2019, you can still do so. The Switch 2 version specifically promises the whole game on a cartridge rather than a game-key download. The website blurbs state the following: “Discover the ultimate Final Full Edition, completely bug-free, update-free, and fully included on the cartridge. No downloads, no patches, no waiting. Just the complete, perfectly optimised experience, ready to play.” Bug-free is quite a claim!
Two collector editions have been announced for this rerelease. The special edition features a making-of book and a special Blu-Ray documentary from series creator Yu Suzuki. The collector’s edition features these plus a statue, key chain and art bundle. Owners of the original Shenmue 3 on PC and PS4 will be offered an upgrade path.
