Vampires have come a long way since Vlad the Impaler, Lestat, and the sparkly one from those movies we all deny watching. Now they go to therapy in Germany, and looking back, all the ones I mentioned definitely needed to talk to someone. So let’s dive into the world of Vampire Therapist and see what problems the immortals have.
You are a long way from Kansas, Cowboy
Vampire Therapist is a bold and very human narrative adventure game that bridges the gap between dark comedy and genuine psychological insight. Think “What we are in the Shadows” had a baby with Fraser. The story follows Sam Wallis, a 1800s ex-gunslinger turned vampire who has traded his revolvers for a therapist’s chair. Sam is also under the mentorship of Andromachos, an ancient warrior who once studied under the Stoics.
You operate out of a moody European Goth nightclub (It’s so Eurotrash, I love it). Helping a diverse cast of undead clients unpack centuries of emotional baggage. The narrative is elevated by an exceptional voice cast, featuring industry heavyweights like Matthew Mercer. These performances bring warmth to illustrated character portraits. The writing expertly balances humour with genuine pathos, proving that even immortal bloodsuckers aren’t immune to self-loathing or the passage of time.
Who is really getting the therapy?
Vampire Therapist’s gameplay centres on the implementation of real-world Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), making it as much an educational tool as it is a game. As Sam, your primary task is to engage in dialogue sessions and identify “cognitive distortions”, unhelpful thinking patterns like “all-or-nothing thinking” or “catastrophizing.”
Identifying these distortions becomes a rewarding puzzle as you peel back the layers of eccentric clients, including a judgmental historical noble and a former actor who has mastered the art of gaslighting. You really get to like most of the clients and, in the end, take some pride when you help them out. It is rare to see a game educate its players so effectively without feeling preachy; the mechanics teach you to challenge your own internal monologue while you help your clients find peace.
Let the Sun brighten your night
Vampire Therapist is a unique game that replaces fantasy storytelling with the much more rewarding adventure of healing. It bundles a sharp, witty script with real tools for self-reflection, making it a standout title for fans of visual novels and character-driven stories. It is a bloody good experience that manages to be both a relaxing escape and a deeply meaningful look at the human (and inhuman) condition. If you are looking for a game with heart, intelligence, and a dash of gothic charm, this is one practice you should definitely visit.
