Spooky season never ends, not around here anyways! It’s time to talk about a new indie horror game! On the chopping block today, we have One-Eyed Likho, which comes to us from Morteshka!
What is One-Eyed Likho?
One-Eyed Likho is a first person horror adventure, inspired by a Slavic fairytale. The plot is honestly very simple. Find Likho, and escape your own dark fate. Likho is the embodiment of evil fate and misfortune in Slavic mythology. She tends to be depicted as a decrepit woman, dressed in black, with only one eye. Naturally, this is how she appears in the game.
The game is set during the 19th century. As previously alluded to, there really isn’t much of a story here. Or rather, what story is there is quite simplistic. You explore a dark realm, solve puzzles, and try to change your fate. Although the game contains a decent amount of lore, it just didn’t all fall into place for me.
One-Eyed inklings
One-Eyed Likho takes an interesting stylistic approach. The whole game is in greyscale. Admittedly, it took me a little while to adjust to this. I like to have my brightness turned up when gaming. I wear glasses when using screens, and higher brightness just helps me a lot more. A game in full greyscale was not it for visibility for me. However, it’s not bad. Just not for me.
Unfortunately, that sentiment reaches across One-Eyed Likho as a whole for me. As mentioned before, the story was just too simple. I cannot stress this point enough, however, that is just my opinion. I personally prefer a meatier story to sink my teeth into.
Undeniably, there are many people out there who will love One-Eyed Likho. I really wanted to be one of them, but I just found myself bored while playing. I do firmly believe that the studio behind it has a lot of potential, especially if they continue to use fairytales as inspiration. It is a largely untapped resource. Lots of inspiration to be drawn there.
Again, One-Eyed Likho is not a bad game. It just wasn’t for me.
