Friends, Erupting Avocado has done it again. The Hungry Fly has dropped, and it’s everything you could want from this delightful indie studio, and more. This is a very special little studio. When Erupting Avocado reveal something, or show something off, you KNOW it’s going to be good. And they did NOT disappoint with The Hungry Fly. Let’s jump right in!
What is The Hungry Fly?
The Hungry Fly is unlike anything you will have ever played before. You play as a fly, a hungry fly. A hungry fly with a specific palate. With sharp teeth to tear into meals, the fly has an appetite for the dead. However, nothing is quite as simple as just hopping from deceased being to deceased being. The fly exists in a swamp where nothing dies. Ravenous, the adventure to find something dead begins. Even without death, this world is grotesque, and even as a fly, every choice matters. And yes, this game is as deliciously surreal as it sounds.
Becoming the Fly
It’s a very intriguing gameplay experience, to become a fly. In the midst of all the horror, it’s actually pretty fun. Especially when you get to use your little fly arms/legs to clean yourself. That was an oddly wholesome addition to an otherwise grotesque experience. But of course, the fly isn’t the only creature in this swamp. On your hunt for food, you will encounter depressing caterpillars, both with their own issues. Although our main adventure takes place in what feels like another dimension, entered through the mouth of a Venus fly trap. Soon, you will learn that the most delicious meals are memories.
As you explore, you will find memories in this area that tell a story. A rather sad story at that. I won’t go into details, because even though they don’t impact the ending you receive, it’s a story worth paying attention to. However, these aren’t the only memories to chow down on. There are four core memories, memories that relate to those around you in the swamp. This is the point where the choices begin. Do you choose to eat the core memories of the creatures you’ve met? And what outcome will that have? After all, there are three endings to uncover.
A flying hit
The Hungry Fly undeniably carries the distinct charm and uniqueness that make Erupting Avocado such a great developer. It is a true stand-out in a horror market that, in my personal opinion, is over saturated currently. You all know well by now, that when it comes to a genre, horror is my greatest love across the board. I have joked before that I have ridiculously high standards, and honestly, with horror games, that is completely true. This is a genre with so much untapped potential, and so many different things that can be tackled. And that’s why I love The Hungry Fly and Erupting Avocado so much. It’s a breath of fresh, swampy air. And I for one cannot wait to see what these legendary humans do next.
