That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is one of the legendary anime within the Isekai genre. A man dies, arrives in a new world and becomes a being of tremendous power due to luck. Now years later it has finally hit consoles and PC. This is That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime ISEKAI Chronicles and it is the story of Rimuru Tempest.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime ISEKAI Chronicles is a 2D action side-scroller. You take a team of three and expand your fledgling village until it becomes a mighty kingdom. Then you go to various areas around Rimuru’s village, kill enemies, and gather resources. You also recruit new villagers, each has a different style of combat and it’s fun to mix and match the teams of three.

The best option is to make sure you have one of each element. Like many games, there is a rock, paper, scissors style applied to the combat. If you’ve got an advantageous element over an enemy you’ll do increased damage. The more varied your team, the more likely you are to win the day. If I’m being honest though, as long as your team is well levelled you’ll be able to strong-arm your way through an area.

The Great Rimuru Tempest explodes in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime ISEKAI Chronicles – A Slimy Good Time

This brings me to my first problem with That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. The 2D environments where you fight are nothing special. The enemies are varied, but still lacking in that oomph effect you’re looking for in opponents. The combat, though important is easily the weakest element of the game. Thankfully there are several other fun elements. One of my favourites is the story.

The game follows the events of the first couple of seasons. This means you start by building the village and meeting all the characters we’ve loved in the anime. This brings in an element I’ve always loved in games, city building. I fell in love with it when I first discovered it in Dark Cloud and this love has continued with games like the Ni No Kuni games. With That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime ISEKAI Chronicles it’s fun, but not utilised to its full effect in my opinion. It’s fun walking around as the village transforms into a bustling kingdom. Ultimately though, it feels a little bit like lip service. Not nearly as involved as the previous titles I mentioned.

The graphics are decent, high-end PS4 in my opinion. The voice acting is top-notch, though that is to be expected. The best part for me is the original story within this game. It starts with a rogue goblin out for revenge and grows from there.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime ISEKAI Chronicles is a lot of fun. It’s for fans looking for more adventures with Rimuru. The gameplay may not be completely up to snuff, but with the cast returning and a genuinely engaging story, this game will scratch that itch for fans.
