Set in the bleak future of 2052, the original Deus Ex, released on PC back in 2000. It paved the way for the immersive sim sub-genre with its innovative game design. You play as JC Denton, a cybernetically enhanced secret agent investigating a terrorist conspiracy within the backdrop of a dystopian society. Deus Ex promised and delivered to players the freedom to explore their options and progress through levels in expressive and creative ways. Its narrative, design and impact on the industry have cemented it as a PC classic.
Cybernetic Enhancements
Deus Ex: Remastered was just revealed at Sony’s State of Play, developed as a joint effort between Aspyr and Eidos-Montréal. The new release promises “new lighting, dynamic shadows, particle systems, and upscaled textures“ as well as new character models and lip sync. Also included will be optimised controls for PS5, ragdoll physics, and general quality of life improvements such as autosaving and cloud saves.
Mankind Divided?
However exciting the prospects of a remaster are, fans have been quick to point out that the updated visuals have altered the art style of the original. New models, textures and lighting have altered the mood of the game somewhat, leaving some fans with mixed feelings. Personally, I am excited about the prospect of enjoying Deus Ex remastered for the modern age. In the meantime, I should really finish Deus Ex.
Deus Ex: Remastered releases on February 5th 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Windows and Nintendo Switch.
