Fear not, Indy fans, for your favourite archaeologist returns with the latest DLC in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle: The Order of Giants. Traverse the ancient streets of Rome, uncovering its ancient mysteries, cults and artefacts. Uncover ancient conspiracies, intrigue and puzzles. To start The Order of Giants, simply return to Rome. Near the fountain of Confession, you’ll find Father Ricci and his pet parrot, Pio. Simply talk to him to start the adventure.

The Order of Dwarves

In the beginning, The Order of Giants had me feeling immensely excited. The quaint and quippy conversation with Father Ricci (and Pio) is the starting point. He’ll get you to fetch an ancient Crusader relic. Followed by the Indiana Jones and the Great Circle: The Order of Giants title card? I was immediately hooked. For a brief moment, I had forgotten that The Order of Giants only takes place in Rome, as the advertising had told us. The wind was taken out of my sails when that hit me. What feels like it should be an entirely new quest, taking you from Antioch to Mesopotamia to Timbuktu, only really takes you a few miles from the Vatican and into the Roman sewers (yay??). In all honesty, this DLC felt more like a glorified Fieldwork side objective than a fully formed DLC.

However, MachineGames does sufficiently pack the story with plenty of engaging set pieces. Indy finds himself exploring ruins deep underneath the bustle of Rome. Sneaking into once forgotten ruins, swinging over ancient aqueducts, and even boating his way through the sewers, there is still much to sink one’s teeth into here storywise. Some grandious set pieces, unexpected twists and turns. What I love about the sewer setting is the suspenseful, thriller, almost horror-like vibes it gave off in certain sections. Were I not Indiana Jones, I would definitely label these sections as scary! Overall, the story hits just like an Indiana Jones tale should, just don’t expect a full ride like the main story.

Good Ol’ Doctor Jones

In the around 4 – 6.5 hours of playtime, depending on your puzzle-solving skills, there is a fair amount of platforming, combat, sneaking and puzzles to soak up. The centrepiece of this DLC is definitely the puzzles, each of which is more enticing than the last. 1 or 2 are definitely a little too janky for my liking (the flaming ball puzzle was particularly egregious for me), but nevertheless solid head scratchers for our hero, Indy. A lot of platforming and combat in between helps to pad out the DLC and make it at least feel more lengthy than it is. This DLC, content-wise, definitely does not feel worth its own price tag (€19.99 at the time of writing). My hope is that we get something more fleshed out further down the line to justify the premium price tag!

For all of its faults, I have to say this DLC is a well-packaged addition to Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Furthermore, it’s a great excuse to return and enjoy some nostalgic adventure Indy style! Just do not expect a long or fulfilling adventure like the main storyline!
