The Blood of Dawnwalker is the new upcoming RPG game from Rebel Wolves. The former Witcher 3 developers showed off their new game on their official Dawnwalker YouTube channel.
New Story-Driven RPG Epic?
Rebel Wolves showed off some breathtaking gameplay from their upcoming vampire RPG, The Blood of Dawnwalker in a 21 minute gameplay video that was captured on PC. The video was narrated by design director, Daniel Sadowski. Players will take control of protagonist, Coen, a young man who was turned into a Dawnwalker, a half-human and half-vampire. Daniel described the game as a ”story-driven open world, dark fantasy RPG set in medieval Europe.” The game is currently in the pre-beta stage and the gameplay shown is just a small part of what is to come.
Gameplay Systems
Rebel Wolves showed off some new gameplay systems from The Blood of Dawnwalker, including some of its combat mechanics. The combat sees players choosing which directions to attack from. These four directions are up, down, left and right, similar to Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 and it’s directional combat system. Players will need to observe their opponents carefully so they attack where the enemy cannot parry. ”Our goal was to make the player feel like a real sword master who closely observes his enemies;” Daniel said.
The developers also showed off Coen’s skill trees. There are three different skill tress in the game. One is for human, one is for vampire and the third is shared between the two. One of the most interesting mechanics in the game is that health regeneration does not happen during the day, giving players that immersive feeling playing as a half-vampire. Coen can cast hexes but these can consume his health. Some of these hexes can be used to damage enemies in combat, as seen in the video when Coen used Burning Blood. This hex boils the enemy blood and burns their skin and deals physical damage over time. ”The way our magic system works, there’s always a price to pay for manipulating reality;” Daniel said.
A Beautiful And Dangerous World
One of the best things about the gameplay that was shown was the open-world. Rebel Wolves showed off some areas of the city of Svartrau, the game’s largest city. We are shown some of the districts of the city, giving us a glimpse of the city and the NPCs who live in it. There are also some dangerous creatures in this world. One creature we see out on the streets is an Uriash. We don’t know much about this creature yet but it’s safe to assume they are a danger to Coen and humans in general. ”Humans have lots to fear, not just vampires;” Daniel said when describing the people in this world.
Daniel really emphasized the dangers of this world, telling players to ”look around at night” as there are many dangerous monsters to encounter. We see NPCs talking about their day and religious beliefs which shows that we will be treated to a world that is very much alive.
Dialogue Options
Similar to other RPGs, players will get to choose dialogue options for Coen. We are treated to one option after watching a cutscene in a church. The cutscene smoothly transitioned in the dialogue scene, another impressive part of the game that was shown. It is likely that player’s dialogue choices will impact events in the game. ”Depending on when you tackle a particular quest, what choices you’ve made earlier, whom you befriended or whom you’ve angered, your gameplay and story experience will be very, very different;” Daniel explained.
It seems players may have the option of playing as an evil vampire and unlock multiple endings in quests. Day and night also impacts how players can tackle quests. During the day, we are shown Coen entering the Cathedral during the day with no issues. Because it during the day, Coen is a human and he doesn’t stand out amongst the crowd. The Cathedral is open to everyone also. But during the night, Coen turns into a vampire and can enter the Cathedral in other ways such as climbing the scaffolds. It really shows the multiple ways players can complete missions and have plenty of replayability.
Vampire Abilities
Rebel Wolves weren’t finished yet. They showed off some vampire gameplay and gave us a glimpse into some of the abilities Coen has at night. One ability is Shadowstep, a vampire ability that lets Coen quickly jump to any place or height within his reach. The Focus Mode is another ability that highlights loot and objects of interest. Coen also has a hunger level that players need to be wary about. Each night Coen will be thirsty for blood. He will need his thirst quenched if players wish to get the most out of his vampire abilities. Players can feed on random NPCs to quench their thirst for blood, another immersive gameplay mechanic for vampire lovers.
Fighting Those Bloody Vampires
Before the end of the video, we get a glimpse of enemy vampires and how to fight them. Combat is still directional and Coen can use his sword to kill vampires like the bandits he fought earlier in the video. He also has access to his own claws in fights as a vampire so players will have some variety when fighting at night. These enemy vampires are Blood Guards, soldiers hooked on vampire blood which makes them strong and deadly to encounter. We then see Coen fighting his first boss after killing three Blood Guards. Xanthe is the name of our boss. Unfortunately for Coen, she kills him in the video with the Boiling Blood skill which literally blows Coen to pieces, splattering his blood all over the screen.
That was all that was talked about and shown in the gameplay video. You can watch the full gameplay below. The Blood of Dawnwalker is coming to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series in 2026.
