From Lucid Dreams Studio is Biomorph a soulslike Metroidvania. In this adventure, you play as amnesiac Harlo. They have found themselves awoken inside a massive structure called The Sphere. Their best friend Kleio is trapped in the structure as well. With their trusty sidekicks Eny and Zeki by their side (literally) they head out into Blightmoor to try and find a way to free their friend and regain their memories. Standing in their way though is an army of biomechanical oddities, each stranger than the last.

Biomorph by name, Biomorph by nature

In Biomorph, the main goal is trying to access the Sphere, along the way you have to help the denizens of Blightmoor, who are still recovering from an ancient cataclysm called ‘The Fall’. As you traverse the world around Blightmoor you gain blueprints and citizens that help rebuild the down-on-its-luck town. It’s a fun mechanic and watching the town grow is enjoyable. As you find new townsfolk and discover the secrets of the world you face off against all manner of creatures, mechanical, organic and everything in-between.

To help you battle these beasts Harlo, Eny and Zeki can manipulate their body to gain access to skills. These include projectile weapons, melee weapons etc. You equip them to your loadout and go from there. You also have ‘Mementos’ which Harlo can equip that buff their body. The real ability to talk about is Harlo’s ability to absorb the properties of the creatures they defeat and then shapeshift into them. These allow you access to new areas that Harlo couldn’t necessarily get to by themselves.

There is a large number of creatures to play with and the game then adds incentives to further the enjoyment. If you absorb a certain number you have full access to that creature whenever you want. Then if you absorb an even larger number the stats of said creature increase. It’s a fun element of the game that makes you want to fight more.

A hollow knight or just hollow?

Biomorph isn’t just another Hollow Knight clone, it has its own style. Its hand-drawn graphics are impressive and charming. The world and its inhabitants are a treat to explore and meet. For fans of the genre, this is an excellent addition. One I highly recommend to fans of Metroidvanias.
