A couple of years back, I reviewed my first Ys title from Nihon Falcom. It has honestly been a lot of fun playing as seasoned adventurer Adol Christin. Now, the team behind Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana has released a new remaster of this title. In Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana Adol finds himself at the shores of Felghana with Dogi by his side. Can he save the day? Probably.
Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana is absolutely brilliant. Much like all early 2000 RPGs it has the graphical charm as well as an adventurous style. With this remaster all elements of the original 2005 title have been enhanced. The epic score has been given three sweeping orchestral choices, each of which has been enhanced to a high quality.
On top of this, there is a refined art style for the character portraits. This can be changed at any point throughout the game for players who are nostalgic for the original. Even with all these changes though there are a few that I wished they had implemented. For example, there is no area map, which makes it a tough slog when you’re looking for new areas.
The greatest adventurer
The plot of Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana is much like other Ys titles. It’s full of memorable characters, intense boss battles, interesting locales and at its centre Adol Christin, the premier adventurer. Following his adventures throughout the four Ys games I’ve played has been fantastic and Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana is no different.
There is also an action-packed style of combat that allows for a lot of fun. Even if it’s simplistic compared to other entries in the Ys franchise. A lot of the combat involves jumping over enemy attacks and finding the weak points that end battles decisively. For enemies that can’t be physically beaten, there are also the multiple accessories that Adol gets access to that give him magical abilities. These each give you access to elemental attacks and these are essential in battle at times as well as in the rest of the world as you solve puzzles with them.
Ultimately, Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana is another great entry in this much-beloved series. Now, if you’ll excuse I’m about to jump into Ys X: Nordics.
