Hey friends! We have some more spooky shenanigans to discuss! Although unfortunately, the spookiest thing about this particular game is not the content. This time round, we’re talking about Last Guest, which comes to us from Room13Games. Let’s just jump right into this one.
What is Last Guest?
Last Guest is a silly little first person psychological horror. You play as a traveler, tired from hours of driving. Thankfully, you stumble upon a roadside motel. However, you will quickly learn that this seemingly normal motel is far from safe. The concierge is very vaguely clear – there are rules. Don’t go near the wall, leave room 8 alone, don’t look out the window, and don’t go out after midnight. Surely one night can’t hurt?
Last Guest is a pretty short game, truth be told. The Steam page lists it at 30-40 minutes long, but I finished it in less than 20. It really is simple as a whole. You don’t do a whole lot. Walk from point A to point B, interact with a couple of things, go to sleep. There is some charm to this though. The jumpy moments, while minimalistic, are timed well. And you can’t help but be intriguied by whatever is happening in the next room. The whole place has an odd vibe to it.
Being the only Guest
Unfortunately, none of it is anywhere near as disturbing as what I learned only after playing. Last Guest uses generative AI. Thank you Steam for enforcing AI generated content disclosures. The developers have admitted under this that they used generative AI to create “visual materials”, including the main image of the game. However, it doesn’t say that this is the only AI material used. This leaves me to wonder exactly how much of this game was made by AI. Honestly, I’ve never felt so much disappointment so fast. I had actually enjoyed Last Guest before finding this out. It’s short and to the point, not complicated. Very much a “no thoughts, head empty” kind of game. However, I cannot excuse AI in any capacity.
Checking Out
Honestly, I cannot comfortably recommend Last Guest to anyone. Had it not used AI, I would have loved to share this game with friends and others who like a short adventure. It goes against every fibre in my being to endorse a game using generative AI. This is one to just skip over completely.
